The Troll A platform is an incredible feat of engineering and holds several world records. It’s the largest structure ever made of concrete, built to extract natural gas from the North Sea. Completed in 1991, this massive platform, owned by Shell, weighs 1,050,000 tons and required 245,000 cubic meters of concrete and 100,000 tons of reinforced steel for its construction.
Troll A was moved to its final location, 80 kilometers off the coast of Bergen, Norway, by a fleet of 10 ships. At 472 meters tall, it rests on the seabed due to its immense weight, which is why it’s classified as a gravity-based structure. Its construction cost $650 million.
This platform not only holds the record for being one of the largest structures ever transported but also made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the deepest underwater concert in 2006, when singer Katie Melua performed 303 meters below sea level.
The Troll A platform has played a significant role in boosting Norway’s economy, making it one of the largest exporters of natural gas. Moreover, it has contributed to environmental improvements by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as natural gas is a cleaner energy source compared to coal or diesel.
Shell’s innovative technology for gas extraction, storage, and transportation—including floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) carriers—has transformed the industry by providing access to remote gas fields. The platform’s environmental footprint has also been minimized through advanced directional drilling techniques, allowing precise well placement with minimal impact.
In summary, Troll A is a landmark in engineering, contributing to both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
